Award nominations

A nomination is considered complete when the following materials are submitted:

  • The IU Robert H. McKinney Alumni Association Award cover page
  • At least two letters of nomination from a colleague, department chair, or other person with specific knowledge on the candidate’s credentials
  • The nominee’s vitae
  • Any additional supporting documents the nominator deems important to demonstrate this nominee’s credentials for the selected award

Since these awards recognize alumni who have brought honor to their alma mater through distinguished career service, achievement, and/or extraordinary service to the School of Law, please include specific examples of the nominee’s achievements, including any service by the nominee on boards, committees, and organizations at the department, school, campus, university, state, or national level.

Nominate someone for the Alumni Association Award

The IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law Alumni Association gives the following awards.

Distinguished Alumni Award

This award is presented annually to an Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law alumnus. There are between one and three recipients who are chosen every year from the more than 12,000 alumni from the school. Those chosen have to meet the following criteria:

  1. Service to the school—Alumni who have participated in school activities through mentoring students, judging moot court competitions, speaking on panels, or presenting lectures to students. Service also includes participating in school fundraising campaigns, scholarship recipient selection committees, the Law Alumni Association Board of Directors, and/or the school’s Board of Visitors.
  2. Service to the legal profession and community—Alumni who have excelled in the practice of law, in government service, or as members of the judiciary. Outstanding accomplishments in community service, business, the military, the clergy, education, literature, the arts, or other fields should also be taken into account.

Early Career Achievement Award

This award is presented annually to an Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law alumnus. There are between one and three recipients who are chosen every year from more than 5,500 alumni. Those chosen have to meet the following criteria:

  1. Service and outstanding contributions have been made by the honoree to the legal profession, their community, and/or their alma mater. The recipient is proving they are distinguishing themselves in their profession, bringing honor to their alma mater, and showing potential for continued success in their field.
  2. The recipient will be in their early- to mid-career stage (having received their degree from the law school within the last ten years).
