Bloomington, Ind. — The Indiana University Alumni Association (IUAA) proudly announces that Yung Nguyen, BS’89, MD’95, of Indianapolis, began his term as chair of the IUAA Board of Managers on July 1. A dedicated IU alumnus and leader, Dr. Nguyen brings to the role a deep commitment to IU, a distinguished medical career, and an extensive record of community service.
A two-time graduate of Indiana University, Dr. Nguyen earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1989 and his Doctor of Medicine in 1995. He is currently the medical affairs director for Cook Group, Inc. Previously, Dr. Nguyen was staff anesthesiologist for IU Health. He has served the IU Alumni Association as a member at large for the Executive Council as well as Manager at Large for the Board of Managers. Dr. Nguyen is a past president of the IU School of Medicine Alumni Board, and he was named Physician Mentor of the Year by the IU School of Medicine in 2021. Dr. Nguyen has also served numerous other boards and civic organizations, where he is known for his thoughtful leadership and collaborative spirit.
Dr. Nguyen succeeds Dawn Michele Whitehead, BA’97, MS’03, PhD’07, of Washington, D.C., who now serves as immediate past chair.
“We are grateful to all our volunteer leaders who bring insight, dedication, and a passion for IU to their board service,” said Chief Alumni Officer Tricia Riveire Stumpf. “Yung’s leadership will further strengthen our efforts to engage alumni around the world.”
The IUAA also welcomes the following alumni leaders to new roles on the Board of Managers for the 2025–2026 fiscal year:
- Chair-Elect: Shontrai Irving, BA’97, JD/MA’03, of Gary, Ind.
- Vice Chair: Mary Susan Buhner, BA’94, of Fishers, Ind.
- Treasurer: Shelley Raper, BS’85, of Fishers, Ind. (third term)
- Secretary: Kyle King, BS’07, OD’11, of Evansville, Ind. (second term)
- Manager at Large: Jason Gerdom, BS’97, of Watertown, Mass.
- Manager at Large: Stacie Richter, BA’06, of Wayzata, Minn.
Continuing their service as Managers at Large are:
- Shishir Deshpande, LLM’06, of Delhi, India
- Mike Wargo, BSG’82, of Granger, Ind.
- John A. Brown, BA’84, JD’87, of Westfield, Ind.
Aidan Lyman, of Cincinnati, Ohio, is the student representative on the Board of Managers for 2025–2026. The student member is a one-year appointed position.
