Kick off your Amazon journey in Lima, Peru. From here, you’ll fly to Iquitos, the capital of the Peruvian Amazon, and board your riverboat, Zafiro‚ in nearby Nauta.
Before leaving Lima, however, make sure to visit the historic Plaza Mayor—the birthplace of this Peruvian city. Skirting the square are five noteworthy attractions: the Government Palace, Cathedral of Lima, Archbishop’s Palace of Lima, Municipal Palace, and Palace of the Union.
After landing in Iquitos, explore the bustling riverside Upper Belén Market or encounter the gentle manatee at the Iquitos Manatee Rescue Center.
Once aboard the Zafiro, you’ll spend five nights winding along the Amazon River, where nature’s most wondrous offerings await.
Alongside expert Peruvian naturalists, encounter pink dolphins in the Pacaya‑Samiria National Reserve, take a nature walk through the rainforest, and fish for red-bellied piranha. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn of the Amazon’s medicinal powers from a shaman or visit a butterfly conservation farm run by the ribereños (river people).
Once in the breathtaking Sacred Valley, peruse Incan pottery at the Pablo Seminario studio in the quaint town of Urubamba and tour the terraced Incan fortress of Ollantaytambo.
Then, admire the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, “the lost city of the Incas,” before concluding your trip in Cuzco. Must-sees in Cuzco include the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Temple of the Sun, and the Incan ruins of Sacsayhuamán Archaeological Park.
