Venice Art Tour

Float down Venice’s iconic canals in a gondola

Allow Italy’s “floating city” to romance you on this enthralling, eight-day art excursion with former Indianapolis Museum of Art curator Ian Fraser.

Kick off your trip with a “secret paths” tour of the Doge’s Palace. Alongside your expert art historian, you’ll visit places within the palace that aren’t normally open to the public.

Next, spend a full day perusing the 17th International Architecture Exhibition with your knowledgeable guide. If time allows, conclude your day at the Naval Museum.

On day three, enjoy a pleasant stroll off the beaten path through the district of Cannaregio. This labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways boasts palaces, churches, and enchanting canals.

Once in the famous Jewish Ghetto, pay a visit to the Jewish Museum of Venice before sampling kosher pastries at a local bakery. Your day will conclude with an authentic “bacaro” wine tour.

Spend day four popping into various churches across Venice, including the Church of the Pietà and the Church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti. In the evening, experience an exclusive, after hours tour of St. Mark’s Basilica. Alone in the basilica, you’ll have the opportunity to go where other visitors can’t. The custodian will unlock areas such as the crypt, said to be the place where the bones of St. Mark are kept.

The following morning, step inside Frari Church. This illustrious gothic masterpiece, commissioned in the 1200s and finished in the 1400s, is home to, arguably, the most famous Madonna painting in history, The Assumption.

Next, visit the breathtaking Scuola Grande di San Rocco, noted for its collection of Tintoretto paintings. Finish out your day with a private tour of Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, which overlooks the San Luca Canal.

On day six, enjoy a relaxing boat ride to the islands of the Venetian Lagoon, while day seven will be spent roaming the grounds of the University of Padua. Scrovegni Chapel, a small church erected in the 13th century, is another must-see in Padua, situated just west of Venice.

Finally, marvel at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection—one of the world’s top modern art museums—before heading back to the States. Installed in Peggy Guggenheim's former residence, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, this museum features artwork by Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Max Ernst.
