David Hòa Khoa Nguyễn, BS‘03, MBA/JD’06, PhD’15, is an attorney and associate professor of Urban Education Leadership and Policy at IUPUI’s School of Education. His journey to IUPUI began as a toddler when his mother enrolled in part-time classes after recently resettling as a refugee from Vietnam. Her determination, along with the opportunities IUPUI offered, forever marked his own trajectory in higher education.
After serving as pro-bono director of the American Bar Association's Disaster Legal Services program for six years, David published a handbook for volunteer attorneys. Upon joining IUPUI, he collaborated with the IU McKinney School of Law to offer the PhD/MJ dual degree in Urban Education Studies. A sought-after expert on education law, David has published two books, over twenty peer-reviewed articles and law reviews, and ten book chapters focusing on affirmative action in education, issues impacting undocumented students, and diversity-focused educational leadership.
David’s alumni involvement began 20 years ago with the Central Indiana Chapter of IUAA, serving in several officer positions. He was on IUAA’s Executive Council, president of the Netherlands chapter, member of the Asian Alumni Association, and most recently as past president of the IUPUI Alumni Council. In 2009, he mentored students in the creation of the IUPUI Regatta. The seed planted by his mother leaves a legacy in his communities. He is proud to be a son, brother, friend to many, dad to two boys, and spouse to Zelideh R. Martinez Hoy, BS’04, MS’06, PhD’14.
