Vi Simpson, LLB’94, LHD’13, assumed the office of chair of the Indiana University Alumni Association Board of Managers on July 1, 2020.
Simpson is a retired attorney and state senator. She served on numerous committees in the Senate, including the appropriations and health committee and the provider services committee. She was chair of the joint budget committee and was elected as minority leader, becoming the first woman to serve in both positions. She was nominated in 2012 as the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor. She has served the university on the IU Grand Challenges Board and on the IUAA Travel Task Force.
As chair of the Board of Managers, she will head the 14-member governing board that provides general management and supervision of the affairs of the IUAA. Other members of the Board of Managers are chair-elect Josh Kornberg, BA'12, of Sellersburg, Ind.; vice chair Lori Pearson-Perry, BS’01, of Indianapolis; treasurer Larry Lentych, BS’69, of South Bend, Ind.; secretary Jeannie Sager, MA’03, of Carmel, Ind.; immediate past chair Deanna Crispen, BA’98, of Logansport, Ind.; and IUAA CEO J Thomas Forbes, BA’90, MPA’96, of Bloomington, Ind.
Three new at-large members of the board are Yung Nguyen, BS′89, MD′95, of Indianapolis, Ind.; Cindy Stone, BS’78, MS’08, of Bloomington, Ind.; and Nicole Yates, AA'06, BGS'07, of New Albany, Ind.
The student representative to the Board of Managers is Blaire Viehweg, BS’20, an IUPUI student completing a master’s degree in criminal justice and public safety.
Returning at-large members of the IUAA Board of Managers are Shontrai Irving, BA'97, MA/JD'03 of Gary, Ind.; Martin Vargas, BS’94, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and Dawn Whitehead, BA’97, MS’03, PhD’07, of Washington, D.C.
Board of Managers officers serve one-year terms, and the secretary and treasurer may serve up to three consecutive terms. A 36-member Executive Council advises the Board of Managers.
The IU Alumni Association is a global organization that brings more than 725,000 graduates together to support one another and Indiana University. The IUAA member program provides access to IU’s vast network through lifelong learning, professional development, various digital platforms, curated content, and university traditions.
