Established in 2000 by Georgia Burgueño, formerly of the IU Bloomington Office of Multicultural Affairs, the IU Latino Alumni Association sponsors programming that promotes interaction between IU, the IU Alumni Association, and the Latino alumni community. IULAA is an affiliate group of the IU Alumni Association.
Since then, the group has doubled the number of Latino alumni and serves 9,770 living Latino alumni worldwide. Historically, Latino and Latina graduates rarely participated in alumni-related activities, but with nearly 10,000 Latino and Latina alumni hailing from IU’s eight campuses, the IULAA represents a vast resource and pool of expertise for our alums and students.
In 2003, the IULAA established the IU Latino Alumni Association Scholarship. As of 2013, the group has awarded 15 undergraduate scholarships totaling more than $12,500. The group has sponsored several initiatives including a high school youth leadership academy and IU’s first-ever Latino Little 500 team. Additionally, they participated in the annual United States Hispanic Leadership Conference and sponsored the 40th anniversary of the IUB La Casa Latino Cultural Center.
Since 2004, the group has also honored numerous distinguished Latino alumni and regularly holds regional and statewide events.
