INDIANAPOLIS — The presentation of the Maynard K. Hine Medal during the IUPUI Alumni Leaders Dinner on Feb. 21 recognizes alumni and volunteer leaders for their contributions in support of the campus and its alumni programs.
The recipients are Charles R. Bantz, Louise E. Goggans, and Marjorie J. Kurt, all of Indianapolis.
The Hine Medal, given annually since 1974, is named for the first chancellor of the IUPUI campus. Maynard K. Hine maintained that a strong alumni program was essential for the university. Recipients will receive a bronze medal engraved with Hine’s profile.
The following are brief bios of the recipients:
Charles R. Bantz
Between 2003 and 2015, former Chancellor Charles R. Bantz, guided the IUPUI campus through a period of unprecedented growth and transformation.
During his tenure as chancellor, Bantz oversaw significant growth in the number of students graduating from the IUPUI campus, with the number of bachelor’s degrees conferred by the campus jumping by 66 percent. In addition, IUPUI created 11 new bachelor’s degree programs, 10 additional master’s programs, and 10 new doctoral programs.
Bantz also presided over the creation of many new facilities on the campus, including on-campus student housing, additional class and research space, and the Campus Center, which opened in 2008 and serves as the center of student life on the campus.
Under Bantz’s leadership, IUPUI also improved its commitment to diversity, significantly increasing the number of minority students receiving degrees and earning national recognition for being among the best campuses for minority students by leading diversity publications.
Bantz earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate in communication from Ohio State University.
Louise Goggans
Louise Goggans, BA’56, MS’69, MedScD’82, confronts community health concerns through the one method she has always found effective—education. Beginning her healthcare career as a dietitian, Goggans established the diet clinic at Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis and served as its director for more than 30 years. She also set up neighborhood health centers, developed a prenatal dietary program, and founded a local chapter of Meals on Wheels to provide healthy food options to seniors.
Goggans has contributed to IUPUI campus life in myriad ways. She is a charter member of the IU Neal-Marshall Alumni Club, and was active in developing the Indianapolis chapter of the club, where she serves as past president. She has been an inspirational speaker for several IUPUI Celebration of Black Graduates ceremonies and helped establish Black and Latino Student-Alumni Networking Night, an extremely successful initiative since 2016.
In recognition of all that the university has enabled her to accomplish, she created the Dr. Louise Goggans Lectureship at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at IUPUI, which is funded through a charitable gift annuity.
Marjorie Kurt
Nursing has been a lifelong journey for Marjorie Kurt, BSN’77, MSN’86, and countless patients and their families have benefitted from her commitment to outstanding patient care and nursing for more than 60 years.
As an IU School of Nursing full-time faculty member since 1988, she has served selflessly to help create the best teaching environment for students. Recognized as an IUSON Outstanding Clinical Professor, she was commended for her student guidance, support, enthusiasm, and strong commitment to high standards of patient care.
Kurt has been an integral part of the Alpha Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International honor society of nursing since her induction in the 1980s, serving as president for two terms, and as a board member thereafter providing leadership at conventions, and achieving numerous awards.
In recognition of her work, the Alpha Chapter of SSTI created a special award in her honor, and she was selected as one of the IU School of Nursing’s Top 100 Alumna Legacy Leaders during the school’s 100th anniversary in 2014.
