LGBTQ+ Alumni Association Emergency Scholarship

Purpose of the scholarship

The LGBTQ+ Alumni Association emergency scholarships help to ensure that students need not choose between their education at IU and living life openly and honestly. If you are an undergraduate student and you have been cut off from financial support from your family because you have revealed to them a sexual orientation or gender identity of which they disapprove, you may qualify for this scholarship in order to reach your educational goals. This unique form of funding is available for either the fall or the spring semester and applications have no deadline.

Eligibility

Any full-time or part-time undergraduate student enrolled at any IU campus may apply for an emergency scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded to students based principally upon financial need. Career goals, community service, extracurricular activities, and involvement in activities promoting diversity and raising awareness of LGBTQ+ and related issues may also be considered. Undergraduate and graduate students may apply.

Prior to applying online, all applicants must contact the Office of Financial Aid to determine what other financial options are available. Also, applicants must contact the LGBTQ+ Culture Center, or similar campus office, to discuss their financial situation. Unless the student applicant elects to remain anonymous on the application form, all recipients must be willing to have their names, biographies, and pictures published in various LGBTQ+ Alumni Association publications.

Award amount

Awards are allocated on a semester basis. The maximum scholarship award is $3,000 per semester. An individual student may not receive more than two scholarship awards, meaning that the maximum number of awards is two per student and the maximum amount payable to any one student is $6,000.

A scholarship application must be submitted for a semester only; an application for the entire academic year will not be considered. The number of emergency scholarships to be awarded for any semester will be pre-determined.
